Captain Hikaru Sulu; Helm officer aboard the Starship Enterprise under the command of Captain James Kirk. Sulu, born in 2237 in San Francisco on Earth Star Trek lV: The Voyage Home, was initially assigned as a physicist "Where No Man Has Gone Before" aboard the Enterprise in 2265 "The Deadly Years", but later transferred to the helm. "The Corbomite Maneuver"

Sulu  assumed  command  of the Starship Excelsior in 2290, and subsequently conducted  a three-year scientific mission of cataloging gaseous planetary anomalies in the Beta Quadrant. Sulu and the Excelsior played a pivotal role in the historic Khitomer peace conference of 2293 by helping to protect the conference against Federation and Klingon forces seeking to disrupt the peace process. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. During the incident, Sulu demonstrated his loyalty and courage when he risked his ship and his career by violating Starfleet orders and attempting a rescue of former shipmates James T. Kirk and Leonard McCoy. During the attempted rescue, Sulu narrowly escaped a Klingon patrol commanded by Captain Kang in the Azure Nebula. Sulu never entered the incident into his official log. "Flashback" (VOY)

Sulu had a wide range of hobbies, including botany "The Mantrap" and fencing. The latter interest surfaced when Sulu suffered the effects of the Psi 2000 virus in 2266, and Sulu threatened everyone in sight with a foil. "The Naked Time". Old-style handguns were another of Sulu's hobbies, and he had always wanted a Police Special in his collection. "Shore Leave".

Hikaru Sulu had a daughter, Demora Sulu, born in 2271. Star Trek Generations

Starfleet Command honored Sulu's contributions to space exploration by displaying his portrait in Starfleet Headquaners in San Francisco. "Flashback" (VOY).

"Tattoo" (VOY) establishes that a Captain Sulu, patrolling the Cardassian border, sponsored young Chakotay for admission to Starfleet Academy around 2350. The episode does not make clear if this is Hikaru Sulu, who would have been around 113 years old at the time. (It could not have been Demora, since Chakotay referred to Sulu as "him") "Encounter at Farpoint" (TNG) shows Admiral McCoy visiting the Enterprise-D at the age of 137, 113 might not be out of the question.

Sulu's first appearance was "Where No Man Has Gone Before" in which he was the ship's physicist, but by "The Corbomite Maneuver" he had assumed his famillar post at the helm. A scean that was filmed for Star Trek II, but not included in the final cut the movie, would have shown that Sulu was about to assume command of the Excelsior at that time. A scene for Star Trek that was in the final draft of the script but not filmed would have had Sulu meeting a young boy in San Francisco who was Sulu's great-great-great-grandfather. Sulu's first name, Hikaru, was authorized by Gene Roddenberry in 1979, but was not used on film until Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

The Animated Series Helmsman and Weapons Officer of the Enterprise. Sulu appeared in 19 episodes.

The episode, "The Magicks of Megas-Tu", was controversial in that it dealt with witchcraft and Satan was portrayed as a benevolent character. In one scene, Sulu conjured up a beautiful woman and was about to embrace her when she turned into Lucifer! Calling all censors!

This episode's story was quite similar to the seventh-season Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Emergence". In "Emergence", the Enterprise-D passed through a magnescopic storm, this caused the ship's computer to briefly exhibit an emergent intelligence. Coincidentally, the computer in that episode even made use of the holodeck to act out some of the facets of its new personality, and Troi, Worf and Data were trapped and endangered there for a time. Recall that in "The Practical Joker" the Enterprise computer trapped Uhura, Sulu and McCoy in the holographic Recreation Room and subjected them to dangerous weather and other pitfalls.
